Hanukkah Card and Gift Program
For thirteen years, the JCRS has brightened the Hanukkah celebrations of hundreds of children who are facing difficult times. (To view images from the 2010 Wrap-A-Thon, click here; click here for images from the 2011 Wrap-A-Thon and here for the Wrap-A-Thon 2012 pictures from Metairie and Dallas.)
Each year, we send out boxes of Hanukkah gifts to boys and girls throughout our 7-state region. Some of these children are recovering from natural disasters, some have Special Needs, and some are new immigrants. They may have parents who are deceased, disabled, in prison, or deployed overseas. Almost all come from families who are struggling to stay afloat in this economy. The JCRS wants these children to know that they are not alone, and that they are remembered by the Jewish community at this joyous time of year.
The packages we send include eight small Hanukkah gifts—one for each night. The gifts are specially selected, age-appropriate and gender-specific. They are accompanied by hand-made cards (made by volunteers throughout our region) and Hanukkah ritual items. Some of the children look forward to these special gifts year after year!
The JCRS also collaborates with chaplains and social workers each year to send boxes of Hanukkah gifts to the Jewish residents of adult care facilities throughout our region. And here in our home town of New Orleans, we have the privilege to personally deliver cards and gifts to the elders in our local Jewish nursing home.
