Anonymous Donor is Matching Funds Donated to the JCRS Summer Camp Program

An anonymous private foundation has offered to match gifts from new and lapsed donors to the Jewish Children’s Regional Service (JCRS) to support Jewish summer camp scholarships for youth from across the mid-south. The matching funds will be offered to campers from outside of major metropolitan areas.

Jewish sleep-away camp allows children to enjoy new social and learning experiences in a special environment that nurtures Jewish identity. JCRS provides needs-based partial scholarships for children between ages 9 and 16 to attend Jewish non-profit sleep away camps in the U.S. and Canada. In 2012, JCRS provided financial aid to more than 300 youth from across its seven-state region to attend Jewish summer camps and the demand for additional funding is increasing each year.

New President and Officers Elected for JCRS Board

On March 10, JCRS elected new officers and 32 new people to the JCRS Board, 18 from Greater New Orleans and 14 from across the JCRS service region.

The new officers are:

Marc Beerman, 2nd Vice President
Amy Haspel, 3rd Vice President
Alexander “Sandy” Cohen, Treasurer
Neil Kohlman, Secretary

JCRS Wows New Orleans with Jewish Roots of Comedy

Saturday evening, March 9, JCRS held the Jewish Roots of Comedy at Harrah’s in New Orleans. The event honored community leaders and featured nationally recognized comedians who entertained over 300 people with laughs, gags, video, and slides that heralded the Jewish world of comedy.

On Sunday evening, November 18, 25 Dallasites gathered at Gina and Alan Tolmas’s Dallas home for dinner and a chance to learn about JCRS activities from the agency’s staff and officers. Current President Bruce Miller spoke briefly, along with JCRS Executive Director Ned Goldberg and Development Director Mark Rubin. Also, in attendance were two JCRS past presidents who currently live in Dallas, Dr. Jeannie Tolmas and Phyllis Stern.

Volunteers Participated in 2012′s Wrapathon in Metairie and Dallas

In October, Jewish groups in Dallas and New Orleans held events to wrap Hanukkah gifts for clients in the JCRS Hanukkah Gift and Card program.

On October 4, the Younger Set of the Dallas Jewish Federation gathered, wrapped, labeled, and then shipped the 373 gift items they collected. Click here for photos from the Dallas Wrapathon.

On October 15, 150 volunteers traveled to the Metairie JCC Goldring-Woldenberg Campus to wrap 2,000 small gifts, which will be combined with the Dallas gifts for distribution to JCRS clients. Click here for Metairie Wrapathon photos.

Each Jewish youth or Jewish state hospital resident receives at least eight individually wrapped gifts, one for each night of Hanukkah.
